Treatments of blackheads and whiteheads
Blackheads and whiteheads are caused by clogged hair follicles. When dry skin and oil accumulates on the hair follicles, tiny bumps appear. The difference between the two is when the skin surface of the clogged pore remains closed, it is called a whitehead. When the skin surface opens up allowing air to enter, then blackheads are formed.

Different methods on how to treat blackheads and whiteheads:

  1. Over the counter and Prescription Medication
    There are various over the counter products that can be used to treat blackheads and whiteheads. Most of them contain ingredients like salicylic acid that helps take off dry skin and benzoyl peroxide. When over the counter medication doesn’t work, a specialist can prescribe stronger medications like adapalene and tretinoin that can prevent blockages in the hair follicles. If needed, antibiotics are also prescribed. Most of these medications are in gel or cream form and are applied directly to the affected area.
  2. Manual Removal
    A round loop extractor or Blackhead extractor is a special instrument used by dermatologists to remove clogs that causes whiteheads and blackheads.   3. Chemical Peels
    Chemical peels are known to remove dead skin cells that cause blackheads and whiteheads. There are mild or superficial peels that are available over the counter where the peeling is concentrated on the topmost layer of the skin.   4. Microdermabrasion
    Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive skin exfoliating and rejuvenating technique. Special equipment is used to spray tiny pressurized crystals to the face and later on suctioned to remove the dead skin cells.

How to Prevent Blackheads and Whiteheads

  1. Wash your face regularly
    Washing your face regularly will prevent oil to plug your pores. Make sure to use a gentle cleanser to prevent skin irritation. It’s a great practice to wash your face twice a day, one in the morning and one in the evening before going to sleep.
  2. Exfoliate your skin
    The main purpose of exfoliation is to remove dead skin cells from your face. You can use exfoliating scrubs and masks and it’s recommended to use them twice a week to prevent skin irritation.
  3. Avoid oil based products
    To prevent your skin producing excess oil which can clog your pores, make sure to use light creams and oil free products to moisturise your skin.
