How Often Should You Exfoliate?

Why should you exfoliate?

Our skin plays an important role in our body. Its main purpose is to protect our body from different elements of the environment and having a skin care routine is really important as it helps your skin to function properly. In fact, our skin works very hard and generates new skin cells continuously because our skin can shed around 30,000 to 40,000 dead skin cells per minute. Since this is a continuous process, there are times that our skin cannot properly remove those dead skin cells. And these dead skin cells will then cause different skin problems like clogged pores, blackheads, acne, blemishes and so on. This is where exfoliation comes in.

Exfoliation is the process of removing dead skin cells on the top most surface of the skin. It also removes acquired dirt and clear up clogged pores. Usually, we can just do this at home by gently massaging a facial cleanser with scrub or you can also use different exfoliating tools like a soft wash cloth or exfoliating gloves.

The question is how often should you do this?

Exfoliation is a great addition to your skin care routine. However, you shouldn’t exfoliate every day. How often should you exfoliate will depend on your skin type.

  • Oily Skin

People with oily skin can exfoliate as regularly as they could, around two to three times a week. Just make sure to not overdo it as it can strip away the natural oil of your skin and will cause skin irritation. It is also important to choose a mild facial cleanser with gentle scrubs as to not irritate the skin. This will help unclog pores to avoid acne breakouts.

  • Dry Skin

Having a dry skin doesn’t mean that you don’t need exfoliation. In fact, people with dry skin can also have dead skin cells build up that prevents your skin to retain and absorb moisture. By using a gentle facial cleanser and exfoliating one to two times a week will help your skin shed those dead skin cells quickly and have a healthier and moisturised skin.

  • Sensitive Skin

People with sensitive skin can also exfoliate one to two times a week using a mild and gentle cleanser. However, you should avoid using exfoliating brushes, harsh peels or cleansers as this can cause skin irritation. It’s safer to use a soft washcloth (preferably made of cotton) to not further cause damage to your skin.

  • Combination Skin

If you have an oily T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin) but have dry cheeks then you have a combination skin. Exfoliating two to three times a week can minimise large pores on the nose and forehead thus preventing blackheads and acne breakouts. You can also use skin care products with Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA) as it can help balance your skin.

It’s very important to listen and pay attention to your skin. If you notice that your skin becomes overly dry or becomes red, it means that you should lessen exfoliation or try to use a milder and gentler exfoliation product.
