Is It Normal for Newborns to Have Peeling Skin

Newborns Peeling Skin

Parents want the best for their children. If you are a first time mum or dad, having your first can be exciting and scary at the same time. You want to make sure that everything is in perfect order before the baby comes out, during the delivery and of course after the baby is born.

Causes and Symptoms

When newborns get their first glimpse of the world, they are far from what we see in the movies—cute, cuddly and clean. In fact, babies after birth look the opposite. They are usually covered with mixture of blood and vernix.  Vernix or Vernix caseosa is a white waxy substance that coats the newborn’s skin and serves as a protection of the baby in the womb for 9 months as well as helps ease the delivery of the baby through the birth canal. Once the vernix is washed off, that’s the time that the top most layer of the newborn’s skin will start to dry and peel. This is very normal. There’s no need to get worried.

During the first few weeks after the baby is born, you will notice some flaking and peeling of the baby’s skin. You will also see that the peeling of the skin is more noticeable around the wrists, ankles, feet and hands. There are instances that the skin of your newborn particularly on the hands and feet will look dry and wrinkly. Sometimes it may even start to crack. This just means that the new layer of your baby’s skin is more sensitive and is still adjusting to the environment.

Treatment

It is but normal to worry if you see something unusual on your newborn’s physique. However, when it comes to peeling skin on a newborn, this is very normal and you don’t have to treat it. It’s best if you just let it shed naturally. If you’re uncomfortable on how it looks like, you can moisturise your baby skin but make sure that lotion or cream that you are going to use will not further irritate your baby’s sensitive skin.

Aside from the peeling skin, sometimes you’ll also notice some tiny white bumps that are often seen on the nose, forehead, cheeks and even the chin. This is called Milia. It’s also very common that your newborn will have baby acne. These are red or white tiny bumps or pimples with visible reddish skin. It looks similar to teenage acne. These two very common skin conditions in babies are normal and doesn’t cause any discomfort on your baby. You only need some patience, because usually it takes a few weeks to a month to clear up.
