Newborn Skin Care Guidelines
Taking good care of your baby can sometimes be daunting especially if you are a first time parent. As a parent, you want to give the best for your baby. One important aspect that you should pay attention to on your newborn’s health is his/her hygiene. During the early months your baby’s skin is very sensitive since it’s still not yet fully developed. That’s one of the reasons why babies are so irresistible. You always want to hug and kiss them. And giving the proper skin care to your newborn will surely pay off to avoid any complications and skin irritations.
Basic Guideline on Newborn Skin Care
- Bathing
The truth is your newborn’s skin is not really dirty. That’s why it’s recommended to give your baby a full bath only two to three times a week. We all know that a newborn’s skin is very sensitive. Just be extra vigilant on the bath products that you use on your baby. Make sure that you get a mild and gentle baby shampoo and wash to avoid any skin irritation. After each bath, make sure to dry your newborn’s skin thoroughly by gently patting a soft and clean towel. Avoid rubbing your baby’s skin as it can cause skin irritation. It’s also a good practice to have a clean washcloth ready to wipe spilled milk when your newborn is feeding. This will avoid the milk becominglodged in skin folds which may cause rashes and irritation. - Washing New Clothes
It’s wonderful to play dress up with your baby. However, it’s also important to wash their new clothes before wearing as you don’t know where they came from. Even if the clothes are new, the skin of your newborn is so sensitive that it can absorb any irritants from the clothes that will then cause skin irritation. Generally, using regular laundry soap is safe for your baby’s skin. But if you see symptoms of skin irritation, switch to a special, hypoallergenic detergent as it could assist on clearing up the skin irritation. - Sun Protection
Your baby’s skin gets easily burnt from the sun especially during these early months.Everytime you go outside, make sure that you protect their sensitive skin by dressing them up head to toe. Use lightweight and breathable clothes so that your baby won’t get too hot. And sometimes, an umbrella could also be a good thing as it could protect you and your newborn in cases that you don’t find any shade. - Keeping your newborn’s bottom dry
It’s important to make sure that your baby’s bottom is always dry. Regularly change your newborn’s diaper to prevent your baby’s bottom to get wet and soiled. It’s highly recommended that you change your baby’s nappy after each wee or poo so that the nappy area will remain dry.Always clean your newborn’s bottom after a nappy change and you can also use a nappy cream to keep your baby’s skin protected and dry.
If you’ve noticed that there are symptoms like rashes, redness and skin inflammation on your newborn’s skin, it’s highly recommended to consult your pediatrician.
