What skin type do you have?
It’s important to learn what skin type you have to know what kind of skin care products you’ll buy. It will also give you an idea and make the correct decision on what skin care routine or treatment you’ll follow. Skin types usually change with age. Your skin will eventually adjust depending on your diet, lifestyle and your hormones. In this article, we will address the basic skin types and their characteristics as well as how to find out what skin type you have

There are 5 basic skin types.

  1. Normal Skin Type
    This is the least problematic skin type as the moisture content of your skin and production of oil is perfectly balanced. There are no dry spots or greasy areas of your skin. It will look clean and clear, and have a healthy complexion.
  2. Dry Skin Type
    The most common characteristic if you have dry skin is your skin is dry and flaky. Your skin feels tight and you’ll have finer pores and finer lines. Having a dry skin can increase skin irritation.
  3. Oily Skin Type
    You have an oily skin if your skin is greasy and shiny. You have enlarged pores and you’ll be likely to have pimples, blackheads and/or blemishes.
  4. Combination Skin Type
    This is the most common skin type. A combination skin means that you have two different skin types. You’ll have dry skin usually on the cheeks while also having an oily skin on your forehead, chin, and nose or also known as T-zone. Blackheads and pimples can occur specifically on the oily skin part of your face.
  5. Sensitive Skin Type
    This is the most delicate of all skin types.Your skin will feel tight and very itchy. It is prone to redness, dryness and irritation.

Now we know the different skin types and their characteristics, here’s a step by step tip on how to find out what skin type you have:

Step 1: Clean your face by washing and using a mild or gentle facial cleanser. This will remove the dirt, oil and/or make up from your skin.

Step 2: Dry your face and wait. When drying your face, use a clean towel and remove the excess water. Don’t rub your face but instead pat to dry. Wait for 30 to 60 minutes until your face normalises. Avoid touching your face while you wait.

Step 3: Go to a mirror and look at your face. Based from the information above, your skin will look clean and clear if you have a normal skin type. Dry if your skin feels tight and flakes will show. Oily if your skin is greasy. You have combination skin if your t-zone is greasy and the rest of the face is dry. And if you see redness, dryness and your skin is itchy then you have a sensitive skin.
